Transcending from"Ethical Subject"to"Romantic Self":On the Romantic Qualities of Feng Yuanjun's Novels in the 1920s
It is generally believed that although the romanticism has a strong subjective color,it rarely transcends real-life experience. However,in the works of Feng Yuanjun,a female writer during the"May Fourth Period","transcendence"and"infinity"constitute the romantic qualities of her works. The paper selects Feng Yuanjun's works from the 1920s to the 1930s,starting with the dialectical relationship between"guilt"and"mother worship",to explore the confrontation between the dual identities of"traditional ethical subject"and"romantic personality"in the writer's spiritual structure. From the aspects of creation/spiritualization of the natural world and progress/martyrdom,it clarifies the writer's breakthrough of traditional spiritual authority with the romantic creed of"creation"and"progress",and the transformation process from"ethical personality"to"romantic self",thereby presenting a transcendental quality of the"May Fourth"romanticism.
