Textual Evolution and Variation Mechanism of the Dong Yong Legend
As a filial piety story widely circulated since the Han Dynasty,the evolution of the Dong Yong legend has the characteristic of"one source and two lines".Since its birth,the Dong Yong legend has taken filial piety as its main theme,forming a filial piety system that reflects Dong Yong's"filial piety in upbringing"and"filial piety in burial".After the Wei and Jin dynasties,the narrative focus of the Dong Yong legend has shifted from"upbringing"to"burial",with the deletion of the father-serving plot and the emphasis on Dong Yong's filial act of"selling himself for his father's burial",which has completed the classic construction of the Dong Yong legend in the process of folk funeral practices and official education promotion.Since the Tang Dynasty,some texts of the Dong Yong legend have absorbed the"Swan Virgin"type of story and the narrative mode of talented scholars and beautiful ladies,forming a composite system of the evolution of the Dong Yong legend,which has achieved a thematic shift from"filial piety"to"emotion".From the perspective of legend morphology,the evolution of the Dong Yong legend has always been based on its simplest plot structure,aiming to solve problems,thus making the narrative ending increasingly change towards a"happy ending".Based on the principle of protagonist priority in narrative,the image of Dong Yong has a"growth"phenomenon in the story,image construction,and scope of activity,and other characters in the Dong Yong legend also adhere to long-sung characters under the influence of the common knowledge structure of the public.
