Replacing"Speaking"with"Writing":The Mechanism of the Formation of the Lu Jiashu Legend
"Writing"and"speaking"play different roles in the production of folk literature, and there is no essential difference between"written"legends and"spoken"legends. As a classic case of"written"legends, the legend of Lu Jiashu reflects the cultural penetration of officials, scholars, and the folk:the rulers grant certain historical figures an official status, the local cultural elites use folk literary forms to form retroactive"regulatory"texts, and such texts flow back to the folk, absorb many common motifs in oral narration and are recorded again, which eventually formed a series of legends that are mainly circulated in books.
