Advances in Ferulic Acid Production by Engineered Microorganisms
Ferulic acid is a plant phenolic compound with various pharmacological activities such as antioxidant, blood lipid lowering, and anti-cancer,which has a wide application in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.Extraction from plants and chemical synthesis have some problems such as low extraction efficiency, high catalyst cost, low production, and environmental pollution. The biosynthesis of ferulic acid through the construction of microbial cell factories is efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly, and will become a trend for the production of ferulic acid in the future. The synthesis of ferulic acid in engineered microorganisms is summarized, the optimization strategies, such as modification of the host strains, selection and optimization of the key enzymes, supply and recycling of the cofactors, cell co-culture,enhancement of the strain stability, and optimization of the fermentation conditions,to improve the ferulic acid production are discussed, and the future prospects of the ferulic acid biosynthesis are proposed.
