Objective:To investigate the inhibitory effect of berberine(BBR)on periodontitis and dental plaque growth.Methods:Twenty-one male C57BL/6 mice are selected and randomly divided into 3 groups(control group, periodontitis model group,BBR treatment group). After successful model construction, the treatment group is treated with berberine for 4 weeks. The general condition, periodontitis symptoms, and plaque staining of each group of mice are observed and recorded. Results:Compared with the control group, the mice in the periodontitis model group shows malaise, appetite and weight loss, and the appetite and weight of the mice after BBR treatment has a certain recovery. The gingival index(GI),gingival bleeding index(GBI)and modified gingival sulci bleeding index(mSBI)in BBR treatment group are lower than those in model group. After treatment with BBR,the periodontal condition of the treatment group is significantly improved, and the amount of plaque in the treatment group is lower than that of the periodontitis model group. Conclusion:BBR can significantly inhibit the occurrence and development of periodontitis and dental plaque.
