The Construction of Literary Zhuangzi in English World in the 19th Century
The narration of Chinese literature in the English world in the 19th century adopted the overall framework of General Catalogue of Sikuquanshu in the early and middle period, which was composed of four parts:the clas-sics,histories,philosophy books and literary collections, and supplemented by the classification of Western genre. In this narrative structure,Zhuangzi belonged to the philosophy part and its literature features had not received at-tention for a long time.In the late 19th century,Frederic Henry Balfour expounded the literary characteristics of Zhuangzi in the preface of his complete translation of Zhuangzi, and Herbert A.Giles did so in his Gems of Chinese Literature.Georg Von Der Gabelentz deeply analyzed the language form of Zhuangzi. With the separation of narrow"literature"from general"literature",the literary Zhuangzi was finally established.
