Fundamental Theory of Education:From a Form of Discipline to a Way of Inquiry
Since the Reform and Opening-up,Fundamental Theories of Education(FTE),as a subdiscipline of education, has gradually been institutionalized by establishing a program and a course of study in colleges, building a professional community as well as publishing in journals. With this process, scholars in FTE have also been en-couraged to figure out the nature and sphere of FTE as a field of knowledge. In the present day, however,FTE is not only confronted with the increasingly weakening of institutionalization and the ambiguity of knowledge boundary, but also challenged by the expectations for its practicality, the domination of empirical research, and the differenti-ation of education as a discipline. To overcome these difficulties,it is necessary to break through the conception of disciplinarizing FTE and redefine FTE as a holistic and integrated way of inquiry into the fundamental issues in edu-cation.It should be committed to(a)making connections among the theories about the differentiated fields of edu-cation,(b)transforming the theories about education constructed from the perspectives of other disciplines,(c)accommodating the theories embedded in different socio-cultural contexts, and(d)developing the"holistic"the-ory on education-in-itself.
