A New Identification of"Lao Peng"in the Analects of Confucius:Also on Confucius'Thought about"Exposition without Creation"
Who is"Lao Peng"in the Analects of Confucius? It is one of the major public cases in academia. The ancient Chinese scholars thought he was Lao Peng in Shang Dynasty,or Peng Zu in Yao's times,or the combined name of Lao Dan and Peng Zu,and so far,no conclusion has been reached.Today, according to the literatures, this paper differentiates various viewpoints, and determines"Peng"is the combined sound of "Bo Yang"in combination with the law of phonetic change. Most people take"Bo Yang"as the second name of Lao Zi,in fact,Lao Zi's sec-ond name should be"Peng",which means the drum sound. And the drum sound is connected with the meaning of Lao Zi's another name"Li Er"which means ears."Bo Yang"is the phonetic change of "Peng".Lao Zi liked ex-pounding the ancient thought, just as Confucius did;As far as Confucius's thought about"exposition without crea-tion"is concerned,"exposition"lies in inheriting culture, and"no creation"is based on Lao Zi's thought of "do-ing nothing".
