The Context-Dependence of the Production of Metaphors
Metaphorical cognition has become one of the cutting-edge research topics in linguistics, cognitive psy-chology,logic and computer science.Although metaphor has been studied from different perspectives and in differ-ent ways, the context-dependence of the production of metaphors in daily communication remains to be thoroughly explored. Therefore, after analyzing the contextual factors which constrain the production of metaphors from the per-spective of dynamic contextualism,we categorized them as cognitive context, communicative context and embodied context,on the basis of which we constructed a context-driven model of metaphor representation in communication and then explicated the contextual priming effect in the use of metaphors by drawing some examples of metaphor use from daily communication. What is particularly important is that the context-dependence in the production of met-aphor was elucidated, thereby contributing to our deeper awareness of the crucial importance of various contextual factors in the use of metaphors in cognition and communication.
