The Dependency Relations between Media and Platforms:A Theoretical Perspective of New Institutionalism
The dependence of news media on Internet platforms is stable and pervasive. The institution perspective can help to examine the shaping process of the relationship between actors in platform journalism, and thus to analyze the current state of media-platform relations more critically. The focus of news production research through the institu-tional lens has shifted from the government to the platform. After entering the platform society, sociological institution-alism focuses on analyzing the practice and impact of institutions such as algorithmic technology and data metrics.Platform dependency is a process of organizational isomorphism, institutional pressure, and the construction of new le-gitimacy mechanisms.Historical institutionalism emphasizes the formation and evolution of institutions. There are path dependencies and critical junctures in the interaction between media and platforms of different types and peri-ods,and their action paths and asymmetric power will influence the performance of platform dependency in the fu-ture.In order to enhance the rationality and validity of the institution perspective in the analysis of journalism-plat-form relationship, more detailed exploration is needed in terms of conceptual definition, analytical focus, explanatory path, and social context.
