The Path Connection between International Relations Theory and International Communication Studies:Power Competition,Interdependence and Identity Cognition
In a practical sense, international relations is the overall background of international communication. In a symbolic sense, international communication is the rhetorical embodiment of international relations. The former has a decisive force on the latter, and the latter has a reflective effect on the former. Therefore, the mutual relationship between the two in practice and symbolism means that the path connection between international relations theory and international communication studies, especially the common perspective of inter-state relations between the two, makes the three mainstream theories of international relations a methodological reference for international com-munication studies.namely, power competition and"weaponization"of international communication from the per-spective of realism theory, interdependence and"immateriality"of international communication from the perspec-tive of liberalism theory, and identity cognition and"intersubjectivity"of international communication from the per-spective of constructivism theory. These three ways of understanding are the path connection between international relations theory and international communication studies, and the theoretical coupling of the two. From the perspec-tive of international communication,it can be used as a choice direction for theoretical studies and a possible option for global practice.
