摘要
作为传播媒介,刊物与出版机构对汉学的发展至关重要.19世纪后半期,英国汉学家在选择传播媒介时注重其学术导向,体现出学院派汉学的典型特征.而活跃在20世纪前期的阿瑟·韦利则更关注传播媒介的文学性倾向,其重要译述几乎都是由以出版文学作品著称的乔治·艾伦与昂文出版社首版.这种基于提升大众审美素养的文学性媒介选择成就了他译作的诸多出版神话,也为出版商赚取了丰厚的利润.而这种文学性翻译也成为阿瑟·韦利与传统汉学对抗的一种策略,体现出他对彼时英美文学现代化转型的一种回应.他的这一取向成为纸质化传媒时代汉学发展的成功典范,对英国后来的专业化汉学产生了深远影响.
Abstract
As the media,periodicals and publishing houses play a crucial role in the development of sinology.In the late half of the 19th century,British sinologists emphasized the academic orientation when choosing communication media,which embodied the typical characteristics of academic sinology.However,in the early 20th century,Arthur Waley focused more on their literary tendencies.Almost all his significant translated works were first published by George Allen & Unwin,a publishing house renowned for its literary works publication.This literary choice of media,based on the enhancement of public aesthetic literacy,not only endowed his translations with numerous pub-lishing myths but also brought substantial profits to the publisher.In fact,this kind of literary translation is a strate-gy of Arthur Waley to fight against the traditional way of sinological research and also a response to the moderniza-tion transition of British and American literature at the time.His choice became a successful model for the develop-ment of sinology in the age of printing,making a profound influence on the later British professionalized sinology.
