Influence of plate thickness combination on undercut value of CFRP-Al self-piercing riveting joint
Five sets of carbon fibre reinforced plastics(CFRP)plates and aluminum alloy plates with different thickness combinations were selected for comparative testing of self-piercing riveting(SPR)connection, and the plate thickness combination was limited as the only influencing factor to explore the influence laws of plate thickness combination on the undercut value of SPR joint. The results show that when the thickness of the CFRP upper plate is fixed, the joint undercut value increases with the increase of the lower plate thickness, while when the aluminum alloy thickness lower plate is fixed, the joint undercut value decreases with the increase of the upper plate thick-ness.Analysis suggests that the aluminum alloy lower plate thickness limits the penetration depth of the rivet toe into the lower plate and determines the upper limit of the undercut value. At the same time, the residual material formed by cutting of the rivet shank into the up-per plate accumulates in the rivet hole during the SPR process, which compresses the lower plate during the penetration of the rivet toe in-to the aluminum lower plate. This results in the lower plate thickness below the rivet hole being reduced, and the thinning effect on the lower plate increases with the increase of the upper plate thickness, resulting in the decrease of the joint undercut value with the increase of the upper plate thickness.
