Characterization of the sorption of heavy metals Cr(Ⅵ)and Pb(Ⅱ)by microplastics
Virgin microplastics were aged by oxidative-UV ageing in a laboratory simulation to investigate the sorption characteristics of virgin and aged polyethylene(PE),polypropylene(PP),polystyrene(PS),polyvinyl chloride(PVC)and polylactic acid(PLA)microplastics to Cr(Ⅵ)and Pb(Ⅱ)in aqueous so-lution.SEM,BET,XRD,XPS and FTIR results show that oxidative-UV ageing increases the surface rough-ness,pore volume and oxygen-containing functional groups of microplastics. The kinetic and isotherm ad-sorption experimental results show that the adsorption of Cr(Ⅵ)and Pb(Ⅱ)by primitive microplastics and aging microplastics is dominated by physical adsorption of monolayers and chemical adsorption of multiple layers, respectively. The adsorption capacity and adsorption characteristics of microplastics a-gainst heavy metals Cr(Ⅵ)and Pb(Ⅱ)are related to the types of microplastics. The biodegradable mi-croplastic PLA showed strong adsorption capacity for both Cr(Ⅵ)and Pb(Ⅱ).
