Comparison of Flowering Stage and Inflorescence Characteristics Among 18 Germplasm Resources of Chinese Yam Introduced in Yulin Area
In order to understand the difference of flowering stage and inflorescence characteristics of different Yam germplasm,we used morphological observation method to investigate the flowering stage and inflorescence characteristics among 18 yam germplasm resources sourced from various regions across China.The results showed that:Among the tested materials,including Beiyang Yam,Xishi Yam,Bikeqi,Tiegun Yam,Taigu Yam and Huangpi Yam,female flowers were observed,with all but Beiyang Yam bearing fruit.The others had male flowers with a light yellow color.The flowering period occurred from July to August,spanning approximately 30 days;The 18 germplasm resources could be categorized into early,middle and late flowering groups based on their respective flowering time.The earliest flowering time was observed in Bikeqi and Ya'an Yam on July 2,while the latest flow-ering time was observed in Beiyang of Yam on July 18.The duration of flowering varied,with Ma Yam displaying the longest flowering period of about 30 days,and Tiegun Yam having the shortest at around 20 days;Flower ordi-nal number,flower number and inflorescence length were different due to different germplasm,and there were sig-nificant differences between male and female flowers.Flower ordinal number per section,flower number per se-quence and inflorescence length ranged from 2 to 6,7 to 22,3 to 10 cm,respectively,Taigu Yam exhibited the longest inflorescence,while Dahe Long Yam,Houma Yam,and Dabaizui displayed the shortest ones;furthermore,there was rich genetic diversity in various interstitial flowering periods and inflorescence characters.In conclusion,the flowering characteristics of Bikeqi,Ya'an Yam,Tiegun Yam and Beiyang Yam can be used as parent materials for regulating flowering period and enhancing yam varieties.Using the inflorescence characteristics of Ximag Yam and Beiyang Yam as parent materials,one can control the number of flowers and pollination at flowering stage,The artificial hybridization or cell engineering technology can be used to develop new yam varieties with comprehensive characteristics inherited from each parent.
