Analysis of Ear Yield and Starch Characteristics of a New Maize Material'Changxin 19'
To expand maize germplasm resources, select high-yield and high-quality maize varieties, and promote the continuous increase in maize yield, dry seeds of the maize variety Chang 7-2 were treated with 250Gy of 60 Co gamma rays.A new mutant,'Changxin 19',was obtained through several years of screening based on plant type and panicle traits. The grain and panicle phenotypes,as well as the grain starch properties of'Chang 7-2'and'Changxin 19',were investigated and analyzed. The results indicated that the grain length, grain width, grain thickness,100-grain weight, grain number per row,and grain weight per ear of Changxin 19 were significantly or extremely significantly greater than those of'Chang 7-2'.Specifically,the 100-grain weight and grain weight per ear of Changxin 19 increased by 8.4%and 28.8%,respectively,demonstrating strong potential for high yield. The total starch content of Changxin 19 was 70.37%,which exhibited good shear resistance and thermal stability. This study develops new maize germplasm and provides a theoretical and practi-cal basis for breeding new high-yield maize varieties.
