Both Cornelius Nepos and Plutarch wrote biographies for the Athenian general Phocion. However, each author portrayed the image of Phocion according to his own writing purpose.Nepos considered Phocion as a traitor of Athens, and he analysed Phocion's political failure in order to provide historical lesson for the reader.Plutarch, who was concerned with moral education and contemporary needs, described Phocion as a moral ideal with various virtues and a pragmatical politician. But there are also similarities in both biographies, which indicate some similar writing methods of both authors. The comparative study of the image of Phocion in both biographies clearly shows the differences and relationship between Nepos and Plutarch.
