Lu Xun's short story Brothers took the plot mode of"mistaken identity",which is similar to the plot setting of Gogol's The Inspector-General.The dreams of the protagonist Zhang Peijun are consistent with the"dream within a dream"in Gogol's The Mysterious Portrait in many details.And in the dream,the key physical trait of Zhang Peijun—"the iron hand"—may come from the gnome Viy in Gogol's The Viy.In the short story,the three elements are jointly used to expose the secret sin.This is also what Go-gol's religious thought tried to show in his works.
