The Moral Implication of"Realistic Drawing"in Xu Beihong's Drawing
Xu Beihong regarded art as the pursuit of"truth"in the modeling ability, and believed that it was necessary to pursue realism with a"sincere"moral attitude and a"broad and subtle"pursuit,other-wise it would be"not loving truth"and"morally corrupt".Xu Beihong has repeatedly cited Zhu Xi's An-notations on the Four Books'Chapters and Sentences to explain the above scientism attitude, which is ac-tually a manifestation of Cheng Zhu's Neo-Confucianist style of thinking.Xu Beihong regarded the pursuit of"scientific realism"in art as a"new way of natural law",and his artistic view of advocating"realistic drawing"as the noumenon and"freehand brush drawing"as the function also originated from Cheng Zhu's Neo-Confucianist thinking.
