Research on Reduction of Drag and Load in Flow Around Cylinder Based on Orifice Plate
When fluid flows a marine riser, alternating shedding eddies will be created in the downstream. Therefore, the marine riser will periodically bear a drag force in the direction same with the incoming flow and a lift force in the direction vertical to the incoming flow.Such fatigue loads can cause structural dam-age or increase structural cost to the marine riser and its support systems. The present study proposes to at-tach orifice-based structures to the surface of marine riser to mitigate the vortex shedding and its resulting fatigue loads. Therefore, numerical simulation on flow around a cylinder attached with an orifice plate was conducted based on the SST k-ω turbulence model.By analyzing of the drag coefficients, lift coefficients, pressure distributions and vorticity distributions, the flow characteristics around the cylinder with an orifice plate were studied at Re=2×104.It was found that the surface attached structure based on the orifice plate can significantly reduce the effect of vortex shedding on the marine riser, thereby reducing the drag and lift fluctuations, and significantly reducing the drag and load of the marine riser.
