On the Relationship Between Lu You's Brushwork and His Selection of Brush and Paper
The calligraphy style of Lu You has the characteristics of"brief and fluent brushwork","clear and compact structure",and"combination of slow and fast rhythm in layout".The brushwork is the key to the formation of his style.Based on the development of brush and paper technology in the era and region where Lu You lived,this paper analyzes his selection of writing materials,including paper and Chinese brushes.It is found that Lu You preferred treated paper with a smooth and tight texture,and a hard and long-edged Chi-nese brush.The craftsmanship of making the brush is called Sanzhuo.This choice is complementary to his writing habits and state,and together they contribute to the unique style of his brushwork.
