Fictional Poetry Exchanges:Correspondence Between Sakugen Shuuryou and Ming Dynasty Officials in Kensai nandoshuu
According to Kensai nandoshuu,Sakugen Shuuryou engaged in poetry exchanges with Ming offi-cials during his mission.However,upon examining related documents such as Records of the Monk Ceyuan's Visit to Ming,discrepancies are evident regarding the time,location,participants,and content of these exchanges.Considering Emperor Jiajing's unfavorable attitude toward Japan,the absence of simi-lar poetic exchanges with Korean envoys,and the presence of other fabrications in Kensai nandoshuu,it can be concluded that these poetry exchanges was not likely to occur.This scene was probably fictionalized by Sakugen Shuuryou or his followers,reflecting longstanding"admiration of China"sentiments in Japan,precedents of fabricated accounts,and potential practical benefits derived from such narratives.
