In Search of Another Reality:A Brief Discussion of Jacques Le Goff's Research on Medieval Imaginary
The research of medieval imaginary,an important pioneering work of the French historian Jacques Le Goff in his academic career, has not received enough attention for a long time.By distinguishing medieval imaginary from related concepts,Le Goff depicted it as a poetic collection of fantastical realities beyond traditional realities.Le Goff's research of medieval imaginary consists of five main themes:the marvelous, space and time, the body, dreams, and heroes.Introducing literature and art materials as historical sources,Le Goff focused on the analysis of words, the examination of an"Extended Middle Ages"and the approaches of historical anthropology which showed the theoretical feature of rejecting economic determinism.Le Goff's research is based on his reflections on the French methodological school and Labrousse's paradigm of economic and social history. Its historiographical significance lies in its transcendence of the doctrines of previous historians, its contribution to total history, and its promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation. The research of medieval imaginary still leaves us with important inspirations.
