China and the UK's Negotiation and Handling of the Compensation Issue of Chinese Seamen During World War Ⅱ
During World War Ⅱ,a large number of Chinese seamen serving on British merchant ships were killed or injured.During the war,the compensation work for Chinese seamen was faced with many problems. After a long negotiation,China and the UK reached a compromise on specific issues such as the compensation standards and payment methods for Chinese seamen. The British side gradually adjusted the compensation standards for Chinese seamen and decided to set up a Chinese seamen'compensation committee, which laid the foundation for further handling the compensation work for Chinese seamen. After the war,in response to the objective situation,China and the UK established the Chinese Seamen'Compensation Committee to promote the in-depth conduction of compensation work. However, the serious deterioration of the social and economic situation during this period affected the actual effectiveness of the compensation work. The relevant settlement reached between China and the UK on the issue of compensation for Chinese seamen had promoted the process of handling the compensation work for Chinese seamen with Norway, the Netherlands and other countries.
