On Vincent Harding's New View of American Black History
As a black scholar-activist and inheritor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s radical legacy,Harding advocates writing for his people. In the wave of academic revolution sparked by the Black Power and Black Studies movements,Harding recognized fundamental problems within the structure of American society and mainstream culture, and publicly rejected"liberal integrationism"and advocated a critical,self-defining,and political new Black history and value revolution to cultivate the cultural basis for any major change in American society. When the black movement fell into the trough,Harding reflected on the value of black experience from the black religion and the black struggle, and believed that black people were the wedge that split the old American myth, the redeemer of"evil America"and the creator of the future new America.Black people need to get rid of the victim mentality, stand with the oppressed people of the world, and work for the creation of a new society that is"truly humane, pluralistic and democratic".
