Tian Jiyun and Theatre Charity in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republic of China
In the social changes of the late Qing dynasty, theatre and public charity constituted the core of Tian Jiyun's career, and his theatre performances and public charity were deeply intertwined and mutually fulfilled. On the one hand,he used his reputation in the theatre world to open the first voluntary theatre in Beijing, laying the foundation for the development of public charity in North China. On the other hand,he conducted his"voluntary"theatre performance to open up a new path for his own theatre career and established the new image of a social educator.Tian Jiyun's life was complex, and it could not be simply divided into the part of theatre and the part of charity. In the capricious situation of the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China,he constantly adjusted the development direction of his career, participated in the social change, and to a certain extent promoted the social reform. In the era of reform and renewal,he took the initiative to conform to the trend of the times, not only gaining social education, but also participating in the social transformation.
