An Attempt at Technopolitics:The Construction of Shuangqiao Radio Station During the Period of the Beijing Government of the Republic of China
The Beijing Government's Navy Department signed a contract with Japan's Mitsui Corporation in 1918,allowing it to build a radio station in Shuangqiao. The two parties frequently discussed technical changes of the radio station, and the Navy Department was always on guard against potential frauds. The turbulent socio-political environment and the diplomatic dispute between the United States and Japan over radio contracts severely hampered the station's construction schedule and reception operations. The technical level and communication capabilities of Shuangqiao Radio Station were widely questioned, which became a reason for the Ministry of Communications to push for the construction of another station by an American company. The Beijing Government didn't have the upper hand in technology and diplomacy, forcing it to become a passive participant in the technopolitics of the U.S.and Japan. This led to a lack of stability and planning in its attempt to promote technopolitics, and it didn't achieve the political goal of realizing the modernization and internationalization of communications through the radio project.
