The Birth of a Classic:History Essentials in the Academic History of the 20th Century
Li Dazhao's History Essentials is the cornerstone of Chinese Marxist historical theory and occupies an important position in the writing of modern Chinese academic history.However,as a matter of fact,the importance attached to this book by the academic community has undergone a complex evolution.During the period of the Republic of China,History Essentials was used as a general knowledge to enlighten the general public.Due to various factors,it didn't have a great influence,and was even reduced to a marginal text.In the early period of New China,due to the focus on"grand narrative"and the discipline of the"class discourse"of the times,its criticism of the experimentalist historiography centered on"Hu Shi School"was highlighted,the truth of its historical theory was obscured,and it gradually tended to be instrumental.After the 1980s,with the liberation of social thought and the change of knowledge context,historians began to reassess the academic status of History Essentials,which was characterized by genealogical narrative.The shift of Li Dazhao's academic power centered on History Essentials reflects the development trend of Chinese Marxist historiography in the 20th century.
