Clinical evaluation of the efficacies of low-concentrating isopropanol to control microorganisms on contaminated surfaces in dental clinic
Objective To compare and evaluate the effect of cleaning and disinfection of different disinfectants on contaminated surfaces in dental practice. Methods Sterile distilled water(positive control group),75%ethanol solution(ethanol group),500 mg/L chlorine-containing disinfectant(500 mg/L chlorine-containing group),1 000 mg/L chlorine-containing disinfectant(1 000 mg/L chlorine-containing group),quaternary ammonium compounds(QACs group),17.2%isopropanol+0.28%ammonium compounds(IACs group)were selected to clean and disinfect glass specimens contaminated by scaling treatment for 12 male patients. The imprint technique was used and residual microorganisms were incubated in blood agar plate medium.Partitions of x2 method was used to test the differences of the cleaning effects of different disinfectants groups and a one-way analysis of variance was used to test the differences in the disinfecting impact of groups. Results No blood, mucus, and other visible contaminants remained on the surfaces of specimens in the QACs group and IACs group, and the residual rates of visible contaminants of the above two groups was significantly different from that of the other 4 groups(P<0.05).The residual rate of the ethanol group(4/12)was lower than that of the control group(9/12),500 mg/L chlorine-containing group(9/12),and 1 000 mg/L chlorine-containing group(7/12),and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The residual rates of the 500 mg/L chlorine-containing group and 1 000 mg/L chlorine-containing group were not significantly different from that of the control group(P>0.05).Total surface colonies(TSC)of QACs group(0.05±0.01)and the IACs group(0.04±0.01)were not different significantly(P>0.05).They were significantly less than those of 500 mg/L chlorine-containing group(21.88±2.79),ethanol group(8.21±1.08)and 1 000 mg/L chlorine-containing group(2.96±0.82)(P<0.05).TSC values of 500 mg/L chlorine-containing group, ethanol group, and 1 000 mg/L chlorine-containing group reduced in turn, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion QACs and IAC disinfectants can obtain good cleaning and disinfecting effects on contaminated surfaces in dental practice.
