Objective:To investigate the mechanism of acupuncture for treatment of rats with chronic stress-induced depression. Methods:SD male rats were randomly divided into three groups, including the control group, model group and acupuncture treatment group. The model group underwent chronic irritation, neonatal isolation and modeling;while the treatment group underwent modeling and synchronous electro-acupuncture treatment. 21 days later, the relative level of ERK1 and adrenal mass in the hippocampus were observed in each group. Results:Compared with the blank group, the adrenal gland volume was increased in the model group and treatment group,as well as the body weight, with signifi-cant differences(P<0. 05);the protein level of ERK1 was significantly reduced in the model group(P<0. 05),while it was not different from the acupuncture group(P>0. 05). Compared with the model group, the adrenal mass in the acupuncture group was statistically different( P<0 . 05 ),and the relative protein level of ERK1 in the acupuncture group was increased( P<0 . 05 ). Conclusion:Acupuncture for treatment of depression can effectively be improved in the adrenal gland volume, and actively increase the ERK pathway.
