"Doing Trifles":the Gender Division of Labor and Symbolic Domi-nation in Daily Life in Nuoha Village,Daliang Mountain
The social division of labor between genders is often premised on symbolic relation-ships in the ideological sphere.Sociologists use the term"symbolic domination"to explain the unrec-ognizable,seemingly gentle, but hidden forms of domination that women experience in their daily lives. They also describe how women's misunderstanding of,consent with and complicity in power stifle the initiative. In Nuoha Village in Daliangshan, the common discourse of men"doing great things"and women"doing trifles"has been internalized as a standard for gender division of labor, involving various daily tasks in land management, household chores, and ritual life. However, the so-called"great things"and"trifles"are more symbolic categorizations and modes of domination.Although women undertake more burdensome daily labor, they remain in a lower position within the value classification system of achievements, which further permeates social structures and daily habits.Only through dual transformations in consciousness and practice can the form of symbolic domination be changed and gender equality be deepened.
