DENG Xiaoping and the Modernization of Higher Education in China
After returning to work in 1977,Deng Xiaoping actively promoted the building of a socialist higher education system with Chinese characteristics.He modernized the higher education system in many ways.In terms of enrollment system,he brought back enrollment in college entrance examination and establish self-study exams;in terms of educational concept,he adhered to"three orientations"by respecting knowledge and talent,and cultivating well-rounded socialist builders and successors;in terms of layout of disciplines,he established a sound discipline system for hu-manities and social sciences,and balanced the development of"long-term"and"short-term"disciplines;in terms of educational program,he improved its level,strengthened the teaching staff and promoted curriculum reform;in terms of management system,he promoted its reform and im-proved the internal governance.Giving higher education the function and mission of a center for cul-tivating talents,a center for scientific research,and a service for building socialist modernization,Deng Xiaoping made important contributions to the advancement of the modernization of higher educa-tion in China.
