Approach to pathogenesis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy based on visceral dysfunction of small intestine
Diabetic retinopathy is a kind of microvascular disease caused by the chronic affection of diabetes mellitus.Traditional Chinese medicine believes that it is closely related to eyes lossing nutrition and turbid toxin originating endogenously. The small intestine has two major functions:reservoir and transformation as well as separating the useful from the waste. If the function of reservoir and transformation decreases, the production of refined nutritious substance will decrease, which makes eyes lose nutrition. If the function of separating the useful from the waste is abnormal, the spleen will be able to disper essence poorly, which makes turbid toxin generate endogenously.Combined with the theory of intestinal flora in modern medicine,it is believed that the physiological function of small intestine is similar to regulating effect of intestinal flora, and plays an important role in the occurrence and development of diabetic retinopathy. It can provide a new idea for diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy to approach the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy based on visceral dysfunction of small intestine.
