Cause and removal technology of black powder in natural gas pipeline
To clarify the composition and cause of black powder in natural gas pipelines,a combination of electron microscopy impurity morphology analysis, energy spectrum microanalysis,X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis was used to study black powder generated in natural gas pipelines in different regions. It is found that the black powder in the natural gas pipelines is mainly composed of oxides of iron, aluminum, and silicon(SiO2,Fe3O4,Fe2O3,and Al2O3)with particle sizes ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 µm.The black powder contains a small amount of absorptionwater. The main reason for the cause of black powder is erosion and corrosion during pipeline operation, mainly because of electrochemical corrosion. At the same time,it is recommended to use magnetic separation technology to efficiently remove black powder from natural gas pipelines. The research results can provide a reference for the operation and maintenance of natural gas pipelines.
