Advantages of immediate ambulation after removal of drainage apparatus in enhanced recovery after surgery(ERAS)for lumbar fusion surgery
Objective Enhanced recovery after surgery(ERAS)is a major trend in lumbar spine surgery, but to date there has been little agreement on the accurate timing of ambulation after operation. The purpose of the present study is to explore the advantage of immediate ambulation after drainage removal. Methods A total of 108 patients were randomly divided into two groups. The rapid group got up and walked immediately after removal of drainage apparatus under professional guidance. The regular group started to ambulate the next day.The amount of exudate, incidence of postoperative complications, length of stay(LOS),inpatient cost, preoperative and 3-month,6-month,12-month postoperative scores of 36-item Short Form health survey(SF-36),Oswestry disability index(ODI)and improvement of the scores were compared between the two groups. Results The general data of the two groups were similar, and no significant difference in exudate, wound complications was found(P>0.05).Patients in the rapid group had shorter average LOS(11.02 days)compared to the regular group(14.48 days,P=0.005),and average inpatient cost in the rapid group(81 221 yuan)was lower than in the regular group(90 421 yuan,P=0.043).Postoperative SF-36 and ODI scores of both groups improved obviously compared with preoperative baseline respectively(P=0.001).There was no significant difference in the improvement of function scores between groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Immediate ambulation reduces the time and economic burden of patients who undergo lumbar fusion surgery patients, without bringing negative effects.
