Application of Ultrasonic Phased Array and Digital Radiographic Testing to Analyze Electrofusion Defects in Gas-fired Polyethylene Pipelines
The weld condition of polyethylene pipelines can be detected by non-destructive testing.Macroscopic inspection and further inspection by using ultrasonic phased array and digital radiography were carried out in the fusion area. The results of the non-destructive testing were compared and verified by axial cutting test of the electrofusion joint at the defects. The macroscopic inspection shows that the end face of the pipe fitting is not vertical enough and the two pipe fittings in the socket are not axial, which caused the two pipes to be in the incorrect place. The non-destructive tesing shows that overheating of the pipe caused the resistance wire to be misaligned.A large number of chain breakage reactions occur in polyethylene materials, forming holes. The holes greatly reduce the strength of the polyethylene in the welded area, which eventually leads to the leakage accident.
