Innovative approaches in experimental teaching for modern metal sculpture:A case study of the curriculum at the Academy of Arts & Design,Tsinghua University
[Objective]Modern metal sculpture,a key form of western modernist art in the 20th century, has significantly influenced contemporary art education in China. This study aims to reevaluate and enhance the experimental teaching approaches for sculptural materials, particularly focusing on the shift from emphasizing craft"techniques"to exploring material"possibilities".The central objective is to address the potential loss of cultural subjectivity and the incomplete development of local cultural resources and value systems that may result from prolonged adherence to western modern art concepts in teaching models. To achieve this, the experimental teaching of sculptural materials needs to adapt to current trends in the art discipline and establish its intrinsic value system.[Methods]This study embarked on innovative reflections and teaching practices drawing on the teaching cases and practical experiences of the metal sculpture materials course at the Academy of Arts & Design,Tsinghua University. These practices encompassed formulating personalized teaching methods, deepening experimental teaching philosophies, and constructing localized cultural value systems. The experimental course was divided into four interrelated yet independent sections. This division was aimed at fostering students'learning interests and creative motivations at different teaching stages, allowing them to thoroughly engage with the entire artistic creation process. In the realm of material experimentation, the emphasis was placed on"experimentation rather than prescription".This approach involved providing differentiated guidance tailored to each student's individual creativity, aiding them in discovering their unique"composite material language".The teaching philosophy underscored the organic integration and transformation of modem metal sculptural forms with the spirit of traditional Chinese art.Through this integration, students were encouraged to explore the material language of metal and its cultural attributes, thereby establishing a link between modem artistic concepts and local cultural resources. This alignment was in direct response to the teaching objectives of the experimental course.[Results]The improved methods for experimental teaching of metal materials and their educational outcomes have garnered significant recognition within academic circles and mainstream art exhibitions. The research findings highlight several key outcomes:1)The progressive teaching process effectively stimulated students'interest in the language of sculptural materials. The personalized teaching approach deepened their understanding of artistic creation, fostering a more nuanced appreciation of the artistic process;2)The curriculum's integration of modem transformations of traditional Chinese cultural resources and artistic spirit was instrumental in improving the singular teaching logic that was previously based on western modem art concepts. This integration enabled students to experience and perceive diverse artistic methods and creative perspectives. As a result, students developed a profound love for outstanding Chinese traditional culture and cultivated a conscious awareness of their artistic identity. This holistic approach to teaching significantly contributes to the construction of high-quality experimental teaching of metal sculpture, aligning with contemporary educational requirements.[Conclusions]The experimental teaching philosophy adopted in this study, which harmoniously combines modem aesthetic values with the spirit of traditional Chinese art,has not only promoted students'understanding and experience of material properties, technical means, and creative thinking but has also stimulated contemplation and practice of local art forms and creative concepts.By guiding students to explore the language of metal sculpture from the perspective and approach of contemporary Chinese artists, the study has successfully constructed a localized value system for Chinese sculpture. This innovative approach to teaching metal sculpture offers a valuable model for art education, particularly in contexts where there is a need to balance modem artistic practices with traditional cultural values.
