Desigh of teaching case about transport layer technology in communication network
[Objective]The communication network offers rich and diverse services to the public.To ensure the quality standards of these services,a variety of technologies are implemented in the transport layer of the communication network.To address the challenges associated with the theoretical comprehension and practical application of transport layer technology in teaching,multiple case-based teaching methods for transport layer technology have been designed and implemented.These methods enable end-to-end information transmission in current mobile communication networks.[Methods]First,this paper introduces the principles of various key technologies in the transport layer,encompassing switching technologies(such as layer two switching,VLAN,and layer three switching)and routing technologies(such as single-arm routing,static and dynamic routing).A layer two switch forwards packets based on MAC address tables.VLAN technology isolates broadcast domains within layer two switches and forwards packets based on MAC address tables and VLAN IDs.Layer three switches facilitate packet forwarding between different LANs or VLANs.Routers connect LANs to the public Internet by executing routing protocols,address translation,and other functions while providing security protection and other features for the LAN.Router interfaces achieve interoperability between previously isolated VLANs through the configuration of single-arm routing.Static routing requires manual configuration by administrators and suits small networks with stable network topologies.Dynamic routing is a routing protocol that autonomously learns routes and is appropriate for larger networks.Second,this article introduces the architecture of the 5G mobile communication network,covering Option 3x for non-standalone(NSA)and Option 2 for standalone(SA).In Option 3x,the core network comprises the 4G evolved packet core(EPC),while the wireless network incorporates both 4G and 5G base stations.In Option 2 architecture,the core network employs network function virtualization technology and a service-oriented architecture,while the wireless network adopts a segregated architecture consisting of a centralized unit and a distributed unit.The case design in this article is based on these two network architectures but can also be applied to other 5G network architectures.[Results]Third,to achieve end-to-end information transmission in 5G networks,detailed teaching cases covering various transport layer technologies were designed.Case 1 focuses on IP address planning,illustrating the planned IP addresses for different network architectures,including interface IP,management IP,and various service IP addresses in the communication network.Case 2 presents two scenarios of Layer 2 switching technology:one involves communication among core network elements,while the other involves the connection between the core network and the bearer network.Case 3 involves two scenarios of Layer 3 switching technology:one addresses the connection between the core network and the bearer network,and the other involves communication among core network elements based on VLAN.Case 4 explores the connection between the core network and the carrier network using VLAN and routing technology.Finally,Case 5 examines single-arm routing technology,focusing on communication between three network elements in the wireless network.[Conclusions]The results of the link detection demonstrate that the developed teaching case successfully achieves end-to-end information transmission within contemporary mobile communication networks.By integrating theory with hands-on practice,these cases provide students with a deep understanding of essential technical principles,equipping them with the skills to effectively apply these technologies in real-world mobile communication contexts.This approach embodies a seamless integration of knowledge and action,fostering the development of skilled engineering professionals.
