Application of benchmarking management theory in university laboratory safety management
[Objective]With the continuous enhancement of educational standards and scientific research capabilities within colleges and universities,laboratory facilities are increasingly tasked with supporting experimental teaching and scientific investigations.However,this upsurge is accompanied by laboratory safety-related challenges.Considering the prevalent issues in safety management across academic laboratories,the adoption of benchmarking methodologies similar to those used in enterprise management is imperative.This approach can drive ongoing innovation and increase the standards of laboratory safety management.[Methods]Drawing from the procedural framework established through the application of benchmarking theory in enterprise management and grounded in empirical observations of university laboratory safety management,this study proposes a systematic approach for implementing benchmarking theory within university laboratory safety management.The approach comprises 3 stages,and each segment encapsulates the following key components:the establishment of benchmarks,delineation of laboratory safety assessment metrics,and collation of pertinent data and resources.Benchmarking is a crucial step in laboratory safety management as it provides a frame of reference and targets to help laboratories evaluate and improve their safety management practices.Furthermore,a comparative analysis and evaluation are conducted,followed by the formulation of enhancement strategies.Through a comparison of the laboratory's safety management indicators with those of the benchmarked laboratories,gaps can be assessed to identify specific areas and goals for improvement.Finally,execution refinement and feedback integration are conducted to optimize the efficacy of the plan.Through continuous feedback and improvement,projects can respond flexibly to changes and challenges,enhancing overall effectiveness and performance.The optimal realization of project objectives depends on the establishment of a meticulously crafted benchmarking management monitoring system,along with timely adaptations and enhancements to existing plans and objectives.This proactive approach ensures seamless execution of the project and facilitates the attainment of envisioned outcomes.Iterative implementation fosters systemic consolidation.After each benchmarking endeavor,promptly encapsulating and thoroughly scrutinizing emerging insights is imperative,thereby delineating new benchmarking objectives and initiating subsequent iterations of benchmarking activities.[Results]Drawing upon the exemplary practices instituted at the Chemical Experiment Teaching Center of China University of Geosciences(Beijing),the adoption of benchmarking management theory has led to considerable advancements in safety management within the center.This includes diversified modes of laboratory safety education supported by a comprehensive system framework.In addition,a marked improvement has been observed in laboratory equipment maintenance and sharing protocols.Notably,the laboratory safety management system ensures seamless coverage without any oversight,integrating real-time supervision of safety information management into operational practices.[Conclusions]The implementation of benchmarking management fosters increased enthusiasm and creativity among laboratory personnel and a culture of continuous improvement in professional skills and safety awareness.Concurrently,this strengthens university laboratories against a range of safety hazards,ensuring the reliability,stability,and sustainable evolution of laboratory operations.Overall,benchmarking holds considerable merit in collegiate laboratory safety administration,facilitating the establishment of a secure and dependable experimental environment while nurturing talent endowed with innovative prowess and safety mindfulness.
