Innovative research on the experimental teaching system of interdisciplinary integration:A case study of reforms in basic experimental teaching of biochemistry and medicine
[Objective]In light of the long-standing issues plaguing experimental teaching,including low scale,small size,and scattered resources in newly established undergraduate colleges in China,this paper examines the construction of an integrated interdisciplinary experimental teaching system.The study utilizes the reform of experimental teaching of biochemistry and medicine at the Zhejiang Shuren University as a case study.By leveraging its disciplinary strengths,the university has taken measures such as integrating experimental teaching resources,building high-standard experimental training bases,optimizing experimental teaching content,enhancing the capabilities of the teaching team,and innovating the teaching management system.These efforts have facilitated systematic changes in experimental teaching concepts,curriculum systems,and management mechanisms.[Methods]Specifically,the university established the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences,a university-level integrated teaching and research platform,to break down the barriers between various departments and integrate experimental teaching resources in biology,chemistry,medicine,and other disciplines for intensive management and sharing.It has also innovated institutional mechanisms and promoted the inclination of research and social service resources toward teaching,effectively expanding the connotation and extension of experimental teaching.Guided by the concept of"openness,independence,and innovation,"the university has implemented a cross-department experimental teaching project responsibility system to promote the open sharing of experimental teaching resources,personalized experimental course customization,and the interdisciplinary integration of science,engineering,and medicine.This has reshaped the basic experimental teaching system in an integrated manner and created a new ecology of open and innovative experimental education.The university has given significance to top-level design and overall promotion of experimental teaching reform.Through"three integrations"(experimental integration,science-medicine integration,interdisciplinary crossing),"three progressions"in projects(basic experiments,comprehensive experiments,innovative experiments),and"three enabling reforms"(mechanism innovation,research nourishment,digital empowerment),the university has advanced systematic changes in interdisciplinary experimental course content,teaching models,and operational mechanisms in an orderly manner.[Results]From 2021 onwards,the university has selected over 90 undergraduate students in science,engineering,and medicine from the grades of 2020,2021,and 2022 for the"Shuren Deng Feng Class."Under the personalized guidance of academic advisors,these students have actively participated in various discipline competitions and research projects,achieving 32 provincial and national awards,publishing 21 papers,and applying for 20 patents.These achievements demonstrated the initial effectiveness of the teaching reforms in cultivating interdisciplinary and innovative talents.[Conclusions]The practice of Zhejiang Shuren University shows that building"high-end"integrated laboratories can promote the integration of experimental projects and the reconstruction and upgrading of interdisciplinary integration,thereby transforming experimental teaching in newly established undergraduate colleges from a"subordinate"of theoretical teaching to an"independent"link in talent cultivation.This pivotal shift from"going it alone"by individual majors and departments to a"team effort"by a university-level teaching and research innovation body strengthens the application-oriented basic experimental teaching and helps establish a distinctive development path to enhance the quality of basic experimental teaching in these institutions.
