A Taxonomic Revision of Rare Medicinal Fungus Leiwan
Leiwan is a valuable and rare medicinal fungus included in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China. It has insecticidal and stagnancy removing functions. However, its scientific name is yet to be confirmed and it was traditionally considered as a species of the genus Polyporus.Using samples of wild sclerotia and cultivated basidiocarps of Leiwan, the scientific name of Leiwan was determined based on both morphology and molecular phylogeny. The results showed that Leiwan is a member of the genus Gerronema.Based on the morphological characteristics of its sclerotium, its name was revised to a new combination,G.lapidescens(Horan.)Ming Zhang & W.X.Zhang.This finding provided the correct scientific name for application and related industrial development of Leiwan products in China in the future.
