The Correlation between Serum Irisin and Carotid Atherosclerosis in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Objective To investigate the correlation between the level of serum irisin and pathological status of carotid atherosclerosis(CAS)in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Methods A total of 56 patients with T2DM were divided into 2 groups based on carotid intima-media thickness(CIMT):the T2DM with CAS group(T2DM+CAS group,31 patients)and the T2DM without CAS group(T2DM group,25 patients).30 healthy individuals without T2DM were established as the normal control group(NC group).Data on gender, age, body mass index(BMI),blood pressure, and duration of T2DM were collected from all the 3 groups;the levels of serum irisin, triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol(TC),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C),high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP),fasting plasma glucose(FPG),fasting C-peptide(CP),creatinine(Cr),uric acid(UA),and blood urea nitrogen(BUN)were measured in all groups;CIMT values were assessed using color Doppler ultrasonography in all groups. Results There were no significant differences in age, gender distribution,BMI,TG levels,TC levels,Cr values,UA levels, and CP values among the 3 groups(P>0.05).There was no significant difference in the duration of T2DM between the T2DM+CAS group and the T2DM group(P>0.05).Compared with NC group, blood pressure,hs-CRP,BUN and FPG levels in T2DM+CAS group were significantly increased(P<0.05),while HDL-C levels were significantly decreased(P<0.01);in T2DM group,FPG and hs-CRP levels were significantly increased(P<0.05),while HDL-C and LDL-C were significantly decreased(P<0.05).The level of serum irisin in the T2DM+CAS group was significantly lower than that in the NC group(P<0.05).Conclusion Irisin may contribute to preventing the occurrence of CAS in patients with T2DM,and its decreased level may lead to the development and progression of peripheral atherosclerosis in T2DM,which means that irisin can be a potential therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of peripheral atherosclerosis in T2DM.
