The Efficacy of Propranolol Combined with Methimazole in Hyperthyroidism
Objective To investigate the efficacy of propranolol combined with methimazole in the management of hyperthyroidism and its effects on calcium-phosphorus metabolism and thyroid hormone. Methods 106 patients with hyperthyroidism were divided into 2 groups based on different treatment methods:the observation group(53 cases)received propranolol combined with methimazole, while the control group(53 cases)received methimazole only. The clinical efficacy of the 2 groups was compared,as well as changes in the levels of serum thyrotropin(TSH),free triiodothyronine(FT3),free thyroxine(FT4),thyroid volume, blood calcium, blood phosphorus, heart rate,2-hour postprandial blood glucose(2 hPG),adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH),cortisol(COR),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and alanine aminotransferase(ALT)before and after treatment;the occurrence of adverse reactions during treatment was observed in both groups. Results The total effective rate of treatment in the observation group was 96.23%,which was significantly higher than that in the control group(84.91%)(P<0.05).After treatment, the levels of serum TSH and COR in both groups were significantly increased compared to those before treatment, while thyroid volume, heart rate, blood calcium, blood phosphorus, and the levels of serum FT3,FT4,ALT,AST,and ACTH were significantly decreased;the improvement in the observation group was more significant than that in the control group after treatment, with statistically significant differences(P<0.001).There was no statistically significant difference in 2 hPG levels between the 2 groups after treatment(P>0.05).There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions during treatment between the 2 groups(P>0.05).Conclusion Propranolol combined with methimazole suggests positive clinical efficacy in the management of hyperthyroidism, which can improve calcium-phosphorus metabolism, alleviate abnormal liver functions, inhibit thyroid hormone secretion, and slow down heart rate, thereby promoting the recovery of thyroid function.
