Efficacy of Pang Dahai Combined with Acupoint Massage in Thirst Relief Among Critically Ill Patients
Objective To investigate the efficacy of Pang Dahai(a traditional Chinese herbal remedy)and acupoint massage in relieving thirst sensation among critically ill patients. Methods 29 patients with thirst sensation in the Intensive Care Unit(ICU)from January 2024 to June 2024 were selected as the study subjects.A self-controlled method was employed:initially, patients received nursing treatment with a cotton swab dipped in water(control group);after a 2-day washout period, they were treated with Pang Dahai combined with acupoint massage(experimental group);the differences in the Numerical Rating Scale(NRS)score for thirst intensity, unstimulated whole saliva flow rate(UWS),and duration of symptomatic improvement were observed between the same patients after undergoing both the control and experimental nursing treatments. Results Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in NRS scores and a significant increase in UWS and duration of symptomatic improvement, with statistically significant differences(all P<0.05).Conclusion Pang Dahai combined with acupoint massage can be therapeutically effective in thirst relief among critically ill patients.
