To reduce the number of installed sensors in structural health monitoring,a non-contact damage identification method directly using the vibration response is proposed. The auto-correlation function of the vibration response is established as the damage index, which is calculated from different measurement points before and after damage.Sensitivity analysis reveals a sudden change around the damage location, indicating its sensitive to damage.Numerical simulation results of the damage identification for a 6-story shear frame demonstrate that the damage location can be correctly identified.Non-contact damage identification experiment of a 6-story shear frame, using high-speed camera, and a 9-span truss bridge, using mobile phone, validate the results obtained from numerical simulation. This suggests that the proposed damage identification method has the potential for online health monitoring of engineering structures.
