Clinical analysis of special complications after polyacrylamide hydrogel injection for breast augmentation
Objective To investigate the etiology of nodules after polyacrylamide hydrogel injection for breast augmentation and its potential relationship with breast cancer. Methods From August 2015 to May 2023,45 patients with breast nodules after polyacry-lamide hydrogel injection in our department were reviewed.Preoperative imaging, intraoperative exploration of nodules, pathological analy-sis and postoperative follow-up were combined to comprehensively analyze the types of nodules and the inducing factors. Results Among the 45 patients, there were 12 simple breast nodules,25 foreign body nodules and 8 mixed ones,113 nodules were send for pathological examination,22.1%result to be mammary hyperplasia with focal duct dilatation,13.3%result to be fibrous hyperplasia with mucous de-generation and calcification.Foreign body nodules accompanied by ultinuclear giant cell reaction accounted for 64.6%.Complete removal was impossible, but followed up for 1 to 6 months, there were no signs of cancer. Conclusion Foreign body nodules and tissue denatura-tion are common complications after polyacrylamide hydrogel injection for breast augmentation, which should be distinguished from breast cancer.Early surgical removal for the patients received injections and long-term follow-up for the patients with residual injectant is recom-mended.
