In the treatment of craniofacial microsomia in children, mandibular distraction osteogenesis(MDO)plays a crucial role.MDO not only enables patients to achieve facial symmetry during childhood but also contributes to the psychological well-being of children. However, literature indicates that in the majority of craniofacial microsomia(CFM)patients, recurrence rates after MDO during childhood can reach 100%,often necessitating secondary surgery.Increasingly, scholars are questioning the significance of MDO in the treatment of CFM in children. This review will summarize and discuss the controversies surrounding the use of MDO in children with CFM at different stages and varying degrees of severity.
