A qualitative study of the care needs of caregivers of patients with microtia during hospitalization
Objective To investigate the inpatient care needs of caregivers of children with microtia,to identify existing problems and their causes.Methods Using purposive sampling and the principle of maximum variation,caregivers of children who underwent microtia surgery at the Department of External Ear Reconstruction,Plastic Surgery Hospital,Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from September to December 2023 were selected for semi-structured in-depth interviews.Through qualitative research and Colaizzi's phe-nomenological analysis,thematic concepts were extracted and interview data were analyzed to identify the primary care needs of care-givers.Results A total of 12 caregivers were included in the study.Their care needs were categorized into four main themes:(l)im-proved pre-admission communication for caregivers;(2)psychological support for caregivers under stress;(3)role transition for regular caregivers;(4)uncertainty related to the stigma of the disease.Conclusion The study highlights the importance of attention and support from health professionals for caregivers of children with microtia.It advocates the establishment of an integrated health care management model,the development of targeted care strategies,and the early identification and intervention of caregiver stigma.
