Rapid Determination of Water Content in THF by Solvent Green 7 Fluorescence Spectra
Solvent green 7 is used to determined water content in organic solvent as its excited state intermolecular proton transfer(ESPT)upon photoexcitation to water. In this paper,we investigate the emission peak intensity ratio 510 to 430nm(I510/I430)of solvent green 7 in H2O-tetrahydrofuran(THF)mixtures in detail.A method for rapid detection of water content in THF using fluorescence is established. The results show that I510/I430 is a constant for a specific proportion of H2O-THF mixture with good stability. When water volume fraction in THF changing from 0.25%to 100.00%,I510/I430(or lg I510/I430)exhibits a linear relationship with the water content. We also find the linear relationship between I510/I430 and the water content in other H2O-solvent binary mixture and H2O-solvent-solvent ternary mixture. Thus, the I510/I430 value of solvent green 7 can be used to measure H2O fraction in the H2O-solvent mixture.
