The western Sichuan Basin, one of the main petroleum exploration and development areas of SINOPEC Southwest Oil&Gas Company,is abundant in oil and gas resources. This area is dominated by anticlinal structures, with well-developed faults, tight reservoirs, and complex gas-water relationships,as a result of multi-phase structure evolution and superimposition. These features cause a subpar application of seismic acquisition, imaging and prediction techniques. In this paper, the operation history of SIN-OPEC Southwest Oil & Gas Company in western Sichuan Basin is reviewed. On this basis, the development of key geophysical prospecting technologies along with the variation of geological targets is clarified, and the existing seismic acquisition, processing and interpretation techniques are analyzed for their adaptability to geological targets and their strengths and weaknesses. Moreover, the challenges for exploring and developing the potential targets, such as the near-source thinly interbedded tight sandstone gas reservoirs in the Jurassic, the near-source tight gas reservoirs in the Xujiahe Formation, and the ultra-deep carbonate gas reservoirs in the piedmont zone, are dissected, and the prospects of key geophysical prospecting technologies including high-precision ima-ging,reservoir prediction based on low-frequency data, description of multi-scale fault system and oil/gas/water identification are proposed. The study results are of guiding significance for applying the cutting-edge geophysical prospecting technologies to effi-cient exploration and development of complex petroleum areas in western Sichuan Basin.
